What is DTMB?

DTMB (Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcast) is China’s own national standard for digital terrestrial TV transmission. In short: the broadcaster sends the TV signal over the air by radio waves from a transmitter tower, and you only need a receiving antenna on your rooftop or balcony to watch digital TV for free.

It is a completely different signal source from "satellite dish" TV, cable TV or IPTV — no internet, no smart card, no monthly fee. The signal comes from a local transmitter tower — a public service broadcast kept on air by the state and local governments.

The key to installation: direction and quality

Terrestrial signals are directional, so the antenna’s element orientationmust match the direction of the transmitter tower. A professional install measures with a field-strength meter and watches two figures:

  • Signal level: received signal power — "how strong the signal is";
  • SNR / quality: signal quality — "how clear the picture is". This is the figure that really decides stable viewing.

The common industry shortcut of "measure strength only, then leave" is exactly why many installs suffer stutter and mosaic — quality was never up to standard. That is why Canwei insists on re-testing quality channel by channel.

What can affect reception

  • Tall buildings or hills blocking the signal path;
  • Too far from the transmitter, with obvious attenuation;
  • Interference from 4G/5G base stations in the same band (use an antenna with filtering);

Is terrestrial DTMB really free? Will it be charged someday?+
Yes, it is free. Terrestrial digital TV is part of the national public service system; the public channels broadcast by local towers are received free of charge. It has never been billed in decades — there is no such thing as a "monthly fee" or "annual fee".
Do new TVs still need a set-top box?+
Most recent smart TVs have a built-in DTMB tuner. Connect the antenna, select "Digital TV / DTV" in the TV’s source list and scan — no set-top box needed. For older TVs or models without the tuner, a KBOX DTMB set-top box does the job.
Why can’t my indoor antenna pick up any channels?+
Common causes: the tower is far away or blocked and the indoor antenna lacks gain; the antenna is placed or aimed wrongly; or your location simply has weak signal. We recommend a site survey or checking local frequency coverage first, then deciding between an indoor antenna and a high-gain rooftop install.
Will typhoons affect the signal?+
Brief heavy rain can cause signal fluctuation, which recovers once the rain stops. The real risk is the antenna being blown off aim — that is why Canwei insists on tightened clamps plus wind bracing. If the signal worsens after a typhoon, book a free re-check with us.
How often do channel lists change? What if they do?+
